Eunhyuk
was born Lee Hyuk-jae in Neunggok, Goyang, Gyeonggi.
In 1999 when he turned thirteen, he auditioned for SM Entertainment through the company's Starlight Casting System with
childhood friend Kim Junsu.
Kim Junsu
was selected to sign a contract with the company soon after, but Eunhyuk failed
the audition. He auditioned again the following year and was finally selected
through showcasing his rapping and dancing abilities. Under SM Entertainment,
Eunhyuk was trained in singing, dancing, acting, and had brief Mandarin Chinese language courses. In 2002 Eunhyuk, Kim Junsu, and another trainee Sungmin
were placed in a project R&B group. A year later, the trio along with three future
members from TRAX (Jay Kim, No Minwoo, Kang Jungwoo) made a brief appearance
in a show called Heejun vs. Kangta, Battle of the Century: Pop vs. Rock,
in which Moon Hee-jun and Kangta individually taught them techniques on different types of
singing. Later that year, Eunhyuk's trio disbanded, and Kim Junsu debuted as a member of TVXQ in 2003. Eunhyuk and Sungmin were
instead placed in project group with ten other male trainees, Super Junior
05, the first generation of rotational boy band Super Junior.
